Stele to the fallen students in the Greek-Turkish War of 1897

The stele was erected by the University of Athens on March 25th, 1901, under the rectorate of Professor Konstantinos Mitsopoulos (1844-1911), on the occasion of the anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821 and in honour of the students of the University who joined the Greek Army and died in the Greek-Turkish War of 1897. The stele bears a lekythos with meanders a symbol of the untimely end of the students’ lives. Several years later, under the rectorship of Professor Georgios Z. Gazepis (1860-1929), the names of 25 students were added.
