Stele to the fallen students of World War I

Under the rectorship of Professor Georgios Z. Gazepis (1860-1929), the University of Athens erected a second stele, to the right of the first stele dedicated to the fallen students of the Greek-Turkish War of 1897. This second stele was erected in memory of the students of the University who enlisted in the Greek Army and gave their lives for their country during World War I. A relief of Nike has been added on the front side of the stele, based on the classical statue of the winged goddess Nike of Paeonius of Mende by the sculptor Michael Tombros (1889-1974). The stele also bears an elegiac inscription, the names of the 26 fallen students and a double-headed eagle. It was unveiled by King Constantine I.
