William Edward Gladstone

The monument was created by the sculptor Georgios Vitalis, a native of Isternia of Tinos and one of the greatest representatives of neoclassicism in Greece in the 19th century. It was created in honour of the fifty years of political activity of William Ewart Gladstone, who was a philhellene, a scholar of Ancient Greek Literature and a politician of pivotal importance for the annexation of Thessaly and Arta to Greece. The statue depicts Gladstone as an orator with his right hand extended towards his audience. He holds the Treaty of Berlin (1880) in his left hand, which ratified the annexation of the aforementioned territories to Greece.
